If you've got an American Express card and travel with Delta, keep an eye on your Amex Offers. A new deal popped up that gives you a $50 statement credit after you spend $250 or more directly with Delta. It's a solid discount if you've got a trip coming up, but there are a few catches worth knowing before you book.

What’s the Deal?

American Express is running a targeted offer for some cardholders: spend $250 or more on Delta purchases and get $50 back as a statement credit. You can make one big purchase or several smaller ones — as long as the total hits $250, you’re good.

The credit should post within a few weeks after the qualifying purchase, though sometimes it shows up faster. Just make sure you add the offer to your card before spending, or it won’t count.

Where You Can Use It

This offer works for purchases made directly through Delta — think flights booked on delta.com, the Fly Delta app, or over the phone with a U.S. reservation agent. It also covers extras like seat upgrades, baggage fees, and even a Sky Club membership if you're buying one separately.

But there's a big catch: the flight you book has to originate in the United States. So if you're planning a trip from London to Atlanta, this won't apply. However, if you're flying from New York to Paris, you're in the clear.

What Doesn’t Count

A few things are explicitly excluded. Gift cards are a no-go, which is a bummer because they used to be a workaround for locking in savings. Also excluded: Delta Vacations, onboard purchases (food, drinks, WiFi), in-person airport buys, hotel or car rentals booked through delta.com, and any purchases made through third-party agents.

Make sure Delta is the merchant of record on your receipt. If you see a different name, the offer might not trigger.

Is This Offer Available to Everyone?

Not really. Amex Offers are notoriously targeted, and this one seems to be showing up for only a subset of cardholders. I checked a few of my own cards and came up empty. Your best bet is to log into your Amex account or the app and scroll through your available offers. If you don't see it, you can try adding it from a shared link if a friend has it, but that's hit or miss.

If you're planning a Delta trip anyway, it's worth checking regularly — sometimes offers appear later or on different cards.

A Clever Workaround (With Caveats)

Some travelers have found a way to use this offer even if their actual flight doesn't originate in the U.S. The trick: book a main cabin flight that does meet the origin requirement, then cancel within 24 hours for a full refund to your original payment method. Delta will issue a flight credit instead of a cash refund, but you can use that credit for any future Delta flight — even one that starts abroad.

Just keep in mind that the flight credit expires one year from the date of cancellation. So it's not a permanent solution, but it can stretch the value if you're flexible.
